Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner, tragically passed away

Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner, tragically passed away on September 5, 2024, after suffering extensive burns from a horrific attack by her ex-boyfriend. The incident occurred on September 1, when Cheptegei was doused in gasoline and set on fire during a domestic dispute in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya. Both Cheptegei and her attacker, Dickson Ndiema, sustained severe burns and were rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries from 75% body burns, leading to full organ failure.

Cheptegei's death highlights a disturbing pattern of violence against female athletes in East Africa, following similar cases involving Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua. The Uganda Athletics Federation expressed profound sorrow, condemning the act of domestic violence and calling for justice in her name

Cheptegei had recently competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she placed 44th in the marathon. Her athletic achievements also included a gold medal at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships
